Destination

Perched atop Empire Pass, this residence is located in Red Cloud—one of Deer Valley’s most desirable ski-in, ski-out communities offering to-die-for views in every direction. The setting is astonishing both in its beauty and in the inspiration it offered the design team. From the outside, the large wood, glass and stone house mimics its surroundings with soaring peaks and a monumental, grounded form. The interiors demonstrate a Taliesin-esque modern craft aesthetic which is artisanal, forward, elevated, and comfortable. The complete design is a marriage of architecture and earthy toned materiality as seen in interior stone walls and expansive windows that balance the mass created by the fireplaces and wood floors, ceilings, and cladding. The soft curve and rounded shapes of select furnishings and fixtures are stylized takes on nature that lend softness to the architecture’s hard lines and sharp angles, fostering a warm and welcoming ambiance. Understated moldings allow the focus to be on the woodgrain, color and design of the doors they frame. Whether through color, scale or “look-at-me” detailing, design elements were selected to complement rather than detract from the home’s million-dollar views.

The front door’s design was influenced by rustic, vertical-plank style doors reimagined as modern and clean. The door features a cast glass inset offering artistry to the home’s entry. Upon entry, a visitor is greeted with a custom designed curved console table that hugs a large, curved sectional that circles the conversational great room. The curved seating promotes togetherness and relaxes the room’s strong lines. Four rounded swivel chairs in the nearby morning room perform similarly. The grand angled fireplace plays with the dramatic angled rooflines, mimicking the surrounding mountain peaks. Custom light fixtures hang from the cedar-clad ceiling into the open stairwell. The pendant’s design were inspired by cairn rock features to guide you up to the snowy loft above.

Culinary Artistry

To design a modern craft kitchen that is natural and durable, a clear matte finish dressed walnut cabinetry paired with a leathered Taj Mahal Quartzite. Kiln glass panels that frame the window act as cabinet fronts and adds abstract landscape-like artwork to the kitchen along with a sculptural metal island support that adds mass to ground the high ceilings. Wine supports are mounted to a backlit Cristallo Quartzite backsplash inside the lower-level wine room. Boxes and grids were custom designed to accommodate the owner’s wine collection. A stone-topped, wood-slatted bar and attached walnut counter-height table invites guests to sit and gaze through the room’s glass wall and suspended glass shelf. The bar can be accessed right as you ski in, perfect for recuperation and gathering with friends.

The Calm After the Storm

The primary suite is a Zen retreat with carved wood furniture, a custom curved sofa, and light drapery to bring the outside in. The tranquil earthy colors of the space offer serenity while the fireplace provides warmth. Symmetry calms the primary bathroom, where a large window and freestanding tub draw the eye past facing custom vanities and a large, glass-doored shower. Amorphous hand-blown crystal pendants illuminate the powder bath uniquely dressed in dimensionally articulated woodgrain marble tile and slab. Topography of the home’s mountaintop site was replicated in the carved cabinet front of the lower-level powder vanity. The space feels like entering a sophisticated mountain forest before the snow sets in.
